This Bruleed Cherry Oatmeal recipe is absolutely worth getting up for in the mornings.

My husband loves a bowl of steel-cut oatmeal in the mornings. Whether we cook it overnight in the slow cooker or cook a week’s worth of them on the stove top, it is definitely one of his favorite go-to breakfasts during the week. Most days he doesn’t like for me to do anything different to his favorite bowl of oatmeal, but some mornings it is just nice to take the simplest of breakfasts and make them special.
Like this bruleed cherry oatmeal.
A delicious bowl of steel-cut oats cooked just right with bits of dried cherries stirred in is always a welcome and hearty breakfast, but when you brulee it – it takes this oatmeal to a whole new level.
You can get two different looks with this bruleed oatmeal, depending on your preference, but I’m always one to go toward a bowl of fluffy oatmeal with specs of the crunchy, sugary topping dotted about the top. It’s like a welcome surprise with each and every little bite.

Here’s how I make this bruleed cherry oatmeal recipe.
Ingredients
- ▢ 4 cups water
- ▢ 1 cup steel cut oats
- ▢ pinch kosher salt
- ▢ 1/2 cup dried cherries
- ▢ 4 tablespoons brown sugar
- ▢ 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
Instructions
- Bring water to a boil in a medium, heavy bottomed sauce pan. Stir in oats and add a pinch of salt. Reduce heat to low and allow to simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Remove from heat.
- Stir in dried cherries and spoon into individual ramekins or bowls.
- If you prefer your bruleed oatmeal to have the look of creme brulee, then press the oatmeal into the bowl with the back of your spoon until flattened on top.
- If you prefer your bruleed oatmeal to have a fuller look, then skip the above step.
- Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and 1/2 tablespoon of granulated sugar on top of each serving.
- Using a kitchen torch, brulee the sugars on top of the oatmeal and serve. If you do not have a kitchen torch, simply place your bowls of oatmeal in your oven and broil until the sugars have melted and hardened, about 2-4 minutes. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
